Web Analytics

I wanted to post about a topic that has been on my mind so much lately, especially because I have been working on gaining even higher conversion rates on mine (and my clients websites). I am talking about web analytics and what they can do for you and your business. On 97th Floor there was a recent post about a new analytics company that gives a detailed report of step by step browsing through your website to show you exactly what visitors are doing, and I have talked before about analytics companies like Crazy Egg and Tape Failure which lets you record sessions of exactly what paths (viewing the mouse moving on your site) visitors are taking, as well as analytical statistics, and tracking too. I have used programs out there that are free like Google Analytics (and still do), but have found accuracy problems with them, and really with they had more features that were useful, and tools that worked 100% of the time.

The only web analytics software I have used that has been flawless, and perfect in every way is from Omniture. It is a paid analytics software, but by far the most superior. When you can find out things like the exact paths that your website visitors are taking, you can figure out what is being viewed the most, what is working and what is not. You can find out what products people are viewing the most, but not buying and then adjust to try and increase the conversion rate (maybe your prices are to high and need adjusting). How important do you think it would be to find out the pages that people leave from the most? (so you could change it, and try to keep them longer) What could you do with information like, what are the hot spots on your site, where are people clicking the most, and are they clicking anywhere near where you really want them to be clicking? When you find out information like this it could help you improve your navigation which we all know will help us with our Google rankings, increase conversion rates, more sales which leads to more money in your pocket. Taking the time to understand website analytics could mean the difference between success and failure.

Basic #2. Understand completely how to write good, persuasive copy. Because if your copy is weak you will make few sales. You can have all the traffic in the world going to your site, but if they are not persuaded to buy it will all be for nought.

Basic #3. Find out how to, or employ someone to do it for you, put together a meaningful web presence. It's not that difficult. But an efficient system in place will save you a boatload of time. Get to know how to set up your sales process, construct auto-responders, and your business will begin to run on auto-pilot.

Basic #4. When all the above three basics have been taken care of, it's time to market your product. There is no need to buy any expensive programs, tools, etc. Just some ordinary proven methods for marketing will get you started.

4 Easy, Fast Money Making Strategies

Websites

Create simple, one-page websites for local small businesses. In many cases, you can use material they already have, such as a brochure, logo, advertisement, etc. for the page without needing much more in the way of graphic arts or design.

Get a $5/month shared hosting account, and a free html editor like NVU. Create a few "sample" sites. Print out the screens at a Kinko's, and take them around to local businesses. Since you're just starting out, you can afford to offer very aggressive prices.

Not only will you get some "lump-sum" jobs, but most will agree to a monthly hosting fee - perhaps $10/month, essentially all profit after the first one, plus perhaps a once-per-month "update" fee to change or update the site.

Info-Products

Approach local repair shops, tradespeople, craftspeople, trainers, etc. Offer to build a new revenue source for them by creating and selling an info-product of their expertise online. They don't have to learn or do anything, and in return you split the revenues 50-50.

Spend a few days videotaping them doing their thing. Use something like Windows Moviemaker to turn it into a series of clean video segments. Ask them to spend an hour watching the video and narrating what they are doing while you record it. Transcribe the recording and turn it into a PDF. Create a simple sales page and put your new, unique info-product up on Clickbank.

CPA Offers

CPA offers don't require selling, just getting someone to fill out a form of some sort. You don't even need a landing page, just drive traffic directly to the offer using your affiliate link.

One simple way to drive traffic to CPA offers is with video. Create a video that is either funny, or bizarre, or controversial. Paste or watermark your CPA affiliate link onto the video and upload it to Youtube and other video sites (make sure you pick an offer that doesn't prohibit this).

You can create screen-capture videos by downloading Camtasia's 30-day free trial, or use pre-fab professional videos from istockphoto.com for $10-$20, or even find a "good" video already on one of the video sharing sites, and email the poster to ask for permission to use it.

Affiliate Products

Do some keyword research to find a few topics that interest you and have high search volume, i.e. as Golf, Fitness, a hobby, etc. Pick an affiliate product in that niche. Register a domain name - you can get .info domain names for 2 bucks, and you'll find many more keyword-relevant .info names available than .com names. Now forward the domain name to the affiliate product landing page using your affiliate link (you don't even need a hosting account if you're just forwarding the domain).

Start writing and submitting articles, using your new, forwarded domain in the resource box, and in the article body where allowable. Write a few articles each day, and pretty soon you'll start to see sales happening.

Finally, at long last a blueprint for internet business success. There are five secrets to creating wealth online. If you will follow these simple rules you can not only succeed where others have failed but you can create generational wealth from your own online business which will benefit your family in years to come.

Rule 1: Select a product or service that has broad market appeal!
It will do you no good to have a monopoly in a certain market niche if you don't have enough customers to stay in business. In other words your product or service must be attractive to a vast number of customers. You are aiming for a wide customer base not a select few. Notice also that the above rule says "product or service". You can have one or the other or preferably both.

Rule 2: Make sure you have a webpage!
The advent of the internet has resulted in many online business to replace bricks and mortar. You've got to have an appealing webpage or at least your own lead capture page. There are several ways to go about creating a webpage. You can build your own webpage or you can outsource it. There are some good sites out there now which are not expensive or you can check out some of the hosting companies. You might be able to skip this step if you join a business which already has a webpage but you would then need a lead capture page which links to the company's website. It is not nearly as expensive to create your webpage as it was in the past but you must have one.

Rule 3: Limit your expenses!
Hey, wait a minute. Didn't I just tell you in the last paragraph that you had a to have a website and that costs money? Correct, but it need not be expensive. Too many people dive in to their own new business and don't watch over their expenses. They soon find themselves drowning in debt and wonder why their business is not profitable. You must have a handle on all expenses in your new business. An internet business will provide opportunities to save money in many areas that a traditional brick and mortar business can't. Just think about salaries for salespeople, rent, workers compensation insurance, and marketing in an online business as opposed to a traditional business. Rule 4: Develop a good marketing plan!

It is true that a lot of successful internet marketers do spend money on such things as pay per click advertising but it is not necessary in order to be successful. How to Take Small Steps to Bigger Sales

I'd like you to take a closer look at the range of products and services you're offering to potential clients. If you're like many of the small business owners that I meet and work with your offer is plain and simple. It consists of the provision of your one-to-one services. One offer - take it or leave it.

Now consider your offer from your potential client's prospective. There's often a distinct reluctance to buy especially if they've not experienced you or your service before. You may be a stranger to them and you're asking them to purchase your service at what may be a relatively high price. It doesn't sound too enticing does it?

In the client's mind they have the option of buying or not buying and unfortunately many times they simply choose not to buy. I would argue that some of the time the initial step you are asking them to take is just too big. Therefore you end up with a big step to small sales.

How about having a wider range of offerings so that a prospective client finds it easier to enter a one-to-one relationship with you? How can you make the initial step smaller and easier for the prospective client to take? Once they are on board you can then market to them so that you have a smaller step to bigger sales.

What Else Can You Offer?

Here are a number of different options that you can offer to prospective clients so that the initial step is much easier for them to take:

1. Publish an Ezine (Email Newsletter)

This is a great way for prospective clients to get to know, like and trust you and warm them up to buying your one-to-one services at a later date. It's very simple for a prospective client to sign-up for your ezine and it doesn't cost them anything. It also gives people the opportunity to get to know the way you think, your personality and exactly what type of services you offer.

These calls have generated tons of new ezine subscribers and subsequently more paying clients.

The real benefit of both tele-classes and workshops is that they leverage your efforts and maximize the use of your time. You can reach multiple people at the same time and if you're doing a tele-seminar the added bonus is you don't even have to leave your home!

Giving PAID tele-seminars promotes your business and generates revenues as well. I do one paid tele-seminar at least every two months on a different marketing topic.

There are many other options that you can offer to potential clients to make it easier for them to enter into a business relationship with you. You could also consider offering an "intensive" or "bootcamp" series of multi-week programs. What else can you think of?

The "Formulas" For Online Sales Success

Some of you may be skeptical about changing your website, some of you will not even give it another thought and some of you will test different strategies, headlines etc in a bid to maximize your conversion rate.

Guess who will be the most successful?

Exactly, if you're not prepared to test different headlines, strategies and sales systems on your website you'll never realise it's true potential and I'm not just talking about small percentage increases here I'm talking about sales increases of up to 400%.

Think about that. What would a 400% sales increase do to your bottom line?

Now not all of your tests will yield rewards & some may actually reduce sales. The thing is not to think of these as failures rather think to yourself, I've successfully identified one strategy, headline etc that doesn't work with the market I am targeting and move on to the next one.

So how do you test each of your changes?

Firstly, you need to have your tracking software in place.

Google analytics is very powerful, free and easy to set up. Most of you by now should have this up and running on your site, if not head over to Google and check it out.

Next you'll need to know which stats to monitor.

At the most basic level you need to be tracking the total amount of unique visitors to your sales page each month.

Note: server hits & server requests do not tell you the amount of unique visitors, in fact, toady server hits and requests are pretty much useless to us for monitoring results.You also need to be tracking the total amount of sales and sales revenue generated by each sales page on your website.With this information you can calculate your website conversion rate and your average transaction price.

How to calculate conversion rate:
EG: 25 (Sales) ÷ 1000 (Visitors) x 100 = 2.50 (2.5% Conversion Rate)

How to calculate average transaction price:
EG: £1,200 (Rev) ÷ 25 (Sales) = 48.00 (£48.00 Average Transaction Value)

If you've not yet been monitoring, tracking & recording these statistics you'll need to start right away and leave your website alone for at least 1000 visitors over a minimum of 1 month.

Why?

Firstly this will give you a good base line of how well your website is performing at the moment including all the peaks and troughs of the month with a suitable amount of visitors.

Secondly each and every change you make to your site should be monitored over the same period of time.

Now although we can monitor through the same period of time your traffic will vary slightly which is why you need to calculate your website conversion rate.Once you are consistently monitoring these results making and monitoring changed is simple.

However, (and this is important) only make one change at a time and then monitor the results over 1 month and at least 1000 visitors.

Why? Well the answer to that is simple.

Let's say you changed your headline and at the same time changed your guarantee statement and your sales conversion rate didn't change. What if your headline doubled sales and the guarantee actually halved sales or vice versa.

How would you know exactly what's happened?

You wouldn't, if you actually do this you'd think oh we'll sales didn't change let's move onto something else, oblivious to the fact that you could be doing twice as many sales.

So it's extremely important that you're patient and make only one change each month and then monitor and track your results.

However, occasionally it will be glaringly obvious throughout a month that a change may be dramatically hurting sales, in this case simply put the change back and come up with something else. There's no point in waiting an entire month if you're noticing a huge difference in the wrong direction.

Keep to this system and test something new every month. I promise you'll dramatically improve your websites conversation ratio. Especially as I'll be giving you great strategies and tips over the coming months that have made huge differences to both our websites and the many clients we coach.

For those of you who don't want to wait an entire month to cover a wide range of changes you can use "Split Testing". This is where you monitor the sales and conversion rates of 3 or 4 sales pages at the same time. Whilst this is simple to do with information products or one page sales process systems it can be extremely difficult with multiple product or catalog based style websites.
